Chris Sutton has revealed his top five sitters of all-time in the wake of Erling Haaland’s sensational miss in Sunday’s Manchester derby.
The City star somehow put the ball over a gaping net from just three yards out towards the end of the first-half in a moment likely to be replayed forever.
It didn’t matter in the end, with Haaland rounding off City’s 3-1 win over United late on after two Phil Foden strikes.
But that didn’t stop Sutton, speaking on Mail Sport’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast, wondering how on earth he didn’t score.
‘Why didn’t he just head it? He could have chested it in, bundled it in with his belly, he could have done absolutely anything,’ Sutton asked.

‘That was the only way you can possibly miss, you can’t miss with a header from that range.’
Sutton also picked out his favourite misses in the regular five-a-side segment.
5. STEVE STONE – Reading vs NOTTINGHAM FOREST (October 1997)
Sutton said: ‘Kevin Campbell goes through and Steve Stone is alongside him. The ball is squared from Campbell and Stone is probably eight yards out with no goalkeeper in the goal.
‘He shanks it wide! You’ve got to see it to believe it.’
It’s All Kicking Off co-host Ian Ladyman added: ‘I will interject, I was there covering the game for the Nottingham Evening Post. It was a Friday night.
‘The look of astonishment on Steve Stone’s face as he turned back to take his position…’

4. PETER VAN VOSSEN – Celtic vs RANGERS (November 1996)
Sutton said: ‘Jorg Albertz goes through and it was a similar situation, a carbon copy, of the Stone miss and he does exactly the same.
‘He has the goal gaping and he shanks it over the bar. Ballooned it! The ball is just flat, pass it into the goal!’

3. FERNANDO TORRES – Man United vs CHELSEA (September 2011)
Sutton: ‘The little step-over, goes around the goalkeeper. The ball’s not really running away from him and how has he shanked that wide? Incredible!’

2. ERLING HAALAND – MAN CITY vs Man United (March 2024)
‘I’ve got Haaland at two just because he scored like 500 goals last season and we’re not used to him missing chances like that,’ Sutton said.
‘He could have bundled it in, bellied it in, chested it in. He took the wrong action but he was so close he shouldn’t have missed that.’

1. RONNY ROSENTHAL – Aston Villa vs LIVERPOOL (1992)
‘Long punt by David James, Rosenthal for Liverpool is in behind the Villa defence and Shaun Teale misses it,’ Sutton said.
‘Rosenthal strolls around the goalkeeper, takes a touch to steady himself before he rolls it into the empty net… or not, seven yards out, off the underside of the bar. It was incredible!’
